"We immediately saw the incredible potential QlikView on the iPad had to address the needs of mobile professionals who needed a larger screen than a smartphone, but didn't want to carry a full laptop and mouse. The value of interactive, dynamic analytics delivered with a few screen taps can't be underestimated. 5 Reasons why QlikView is better than Cognos

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Submit to Digg digg it |  Add to delicious  delicious |  Submit to StumbleUpon StumbleUpon |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn | Submit to Reddit reddit

1. QlikView is growing faster than Cognos

what ifIn my last position as Chief Exec of a software solutions company, we partnered with Cognos and QlikView. Even before Cognos were bought by IBM we noticed that we were winning more customers with QlikView compared to Cognos by a ratio of 2:1. That is one of the reasons I moved with out with the QlikView partnership to form a new company QlikPower that would be dedicated to QlikView. And this is not just our experience - worldwide QlikView is officially the fastest growing Business Intelligence product with 570,000 users.

2. QlikView is easier to use than Cognos

There is no doubt about that - as CEO, which product did we use to manage our business and make better and more informed decisions - you're right, QlikView ! It was just so easy and intuitive to use compared to Cognos - I am not good at going on Training courses and guess what - you don't need to with QlikView. It's so obvious how to use the product that you will be ‘qliking' in minutes to get the information you need.

3. QlikView is better value than Cognos

Just check it out to compare - look at an entry level system of say 10 to 20 users and see what it costs. Cognos is always about 255 more expensive. You can configure a 10 User QlikView system for under €15k whereas a Cognos configuration to give similar functionality will cost almost €20k. And for 20 Users the QlikView configuration is almost 50% cheaper. This is because Cognos is essentially an ‘enterprise-only' type of solution, only really suitable for the big boys and more particularly so after their acquisition by IBM. The annual support cost is also 25% more expensive for Cognos.

4. QlikView is faster to implement than Cognos

Ask any developer - you can build a QlikView application in a fraction of the time it takes to build a similar solution with Cognos - I know we benchmarked it and not only that - we discovered that you don't have to worry about your cube design with QlikView whereas you have to be more careful with Cognos or you won't be able to deliver the right results. QlikView takes a different approach to the traditional Cognos method of defining the requirements, staging the data and developing the cube. With QlikView you can go straight at it by taking the data directly into memory and automatically making all the associations.

5. QlikView is easier to customise

Absolutely - many of the ‘look and feel' type of customisations that everyone requires can be done with a few clicks, even by end users. For developers using Cognos you have to create a lot of cubes and views to support different aspects of the same data - this can lead to confusion, errors, and administrative overhead. QlikView's visual design elements provide the flexibility to bring multiple viewpoints into one, which simplifies the whole process.

QlikPower taps into Data.gov.uk for Business Intelligence

UK Data ImageLat month saw the official launch of the new Data.gov.uk portal. Advised by Sir Tim Berners-Lee and Professor Nigel Shadbolt and others, the UK government has opened up all this data for reuse. This site give access to a wealth of government data and is under constant development. The aim of the site is to provide easy access to reams of public sector data, such as traffic, crime and housing figures. All this information has been made available free of charge, and can be consumed by third party applications. The hope is that the site will encourage individuals and businesses to find ways to make better use of this information.

As they say on their website

''We're very aware that there are more people like you outside of government who have the skills and abilities to make wonderful things out of public data. These are our first steps in building a collaborative relationship with you.''

The launch of the portal mirrors a similar project kick-started by the Obama administration last year to make US Government data available to the public in an open and accessible manner. Boris Johnson has also announced that data relating specifically to life in London will also be made available publicly and for free.

It seems 2010 may be the era of open data access. It's an exciting propsect to watch what people do with it! Here at QlikPower we have a number of ideas which we will be announcing shortly which will show you the power of QlikView to take real advantage of this valuable data source.

For more details on the new government portal, check out this BBC News article, or visit it for yourself here.

Which partner should you choose for QlikView Professional Services

Professional ServicesShould you develop your own Business Intelligence application or should you employ Professional Services from a partner ?

The main reason that partners exist and are promoted by the main Business Intelligence vendors is because it is one of the best methods of satisfying both the diverse needs of an ever increasing community of licensed users, and the need to increase shareholder value.

Let's face it - the main BI vendors are primarily interested in Licence sales and annual maintenance and support revenues. Their capitalised value is influenced more by the growth in these numbers on a quarter by quater basis, rather than on any valuation placed on their revenues from Professional Services.

Sure the BI Vendors need to provide a top level skillset at the leading edge of the technology in order to ensure that the market is exploiting their capabilities to the fullest, but these services tend to be scarce and very expensive.

Partners on the other hand generally derive most of their profit from this area of their business and their commitment to the provision of Professional Services and the quality of their services can generally be quickly determined by reference to their existing customer base. It is often the case that a partner will have more business solution capability than the vendors because of their experience in dealing with a particular sector or application.

At the end of the day it's all about the quality of the services that you can get and the cost of same which will determine which partner you should deal with when implementing a new Business Intelligence application.

QlikPower - which is a new force in QlikView Professional Services in Europe - has an extensive pool of resources on which to draw. QlikPower offers an initial free assessment to determine the full extent of the engegement requuired.

Will Business Intelligence take off into the Cloud?

  | Share on Twitter Twitter | Share on Facebook Facebook | Submit to Digg digg it |  Add to delicious  delicious |  Submit to StumbleUpon StumbleUpon |  Share on LinkedIn LinkedIn | Submit to Reddit reddit

BI in the CloudInterest in the Cloud is growing daily and as we try to predict the impact on Business Intelligence we are faced with a number of interesting thoughts.

Will BI take off in the Cloud? Quite frankly I don't know!

I have read all the important analyst views on this topic and I will summarise two principal ones below - Gartner and IDC

Gartner says that BI SaaS (Software as a Service) adoption, while very low today, will grow steadily as maturing BI SaaS solutions are delivered in private and public clouds and in on-premises and off-premises configurations by trusted vendors. This growth will be accelerated by organizations' increasing need to deploy intuitive BI tools and applications cost-effectively to more users, reduce time to value and time to scale, and lower capital expenditures.

And according to IDC - The market for SaaS business analytic technologies is set to surge.

Industry watchers have long looked for the software-as-a-service (SaaS) market to take off. However, last year BI pros saw several events that belie that expectation. For example, the business intelligence (BI) segment's most prominent SaaS player, LucidEra, ceased operations, the victim -- industry experts and SaaS principals rushed to reassure BI consumers -- not so much of a flawed model but of a brutal economic climate. The latter claim was bolstered by the rise of a number of SaaS vendors, including PivotLink and GoodData.

Beyond the initial cadre of small startup SaaS vendors, larger leading vendors are beginning to pursue SaaS/cloud-based strategies, with most building interoperability with cloud computing platforms, such as Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Google's platform as a service (PaaS) offering and Microsoft's Azure platform. These same BI vendors are also increasing their OEM efforts with SaaS application vendors and industry data providers. The merging of analytics with industry data and by industry data providers delivered via a SaaS model has been one of the more widely adopted use cases for BI delivered as a service and is another key growth driver.

QlikPower as a QlikView partner offers their BI solution on the EC2 platform.
